The Center for Identity, Ideas, and Institutional Integrity
Design Better Futures
Shift the Future is a center for learning, training, research, and development that helps people cultivate congruence between who they are, the ideas they steward, and the institutions they influence.

The Shift Framework
Identity
We shape leaders with purpose and clarity.
Ideas
We teach deep thinking and imagination.
Institutions
We design systems built to last and genuinely serve.

This is the future Shift exists to help create.
Shift the Future equips people to design institutions that serve people well.
We equip people to design with people in mind, steward power responsibly, strengthen institutions ethically, and contribute to human dignity, institutional integrity, and cultural renewal.
What We Explore
Our work explores how people are formed, how ideas shape culture, and how institutions influence the lives of individuals, communities, and future generations. But exploration alone is not the goal — we are actively researching to prove our core hypothesis: that the Shift Framework produces what we say it will. Our ultimate aim is not merely to validate a model, but to instill it into society for the cultural renewal of individuals, communities, and future generations. This is how we shift the future.
What Makes Us Unique
Drawing from Christian theology, humanitarian transformational development, ethical leadership, and systems thinking, we develop frameworks, fellowships, certifications, research, and partnerships that help people steward power responsibly, strengthen institutional integrity, and contribute to lasting cultural renewal.
The Shift Thesis
We believe the future is shaped by the institutions we create.
We believe institutions are shaped by the people who design them.
We believe if we want a different future, we must first become different kinds of people.
Four ways we advance the mission.
As The Center for Identity, Ideas, and Institutional Integrity, we advance this mission through four primary pathways.
Shift Formation Certification
A six-month whole-person formation experience built on the Shift Framework. Participants leave with a recognized certification in ethical leadership and institutional design — stackable micro-credentials that carry real-world weight.
Shift Research
Our research arm advances the Shift Framework through scholarship and practice — including the Designing Better Futures Initiative (DBFI), an interdisciplinary study of how character formation shapes the institutions leaders build, and the Shift Fellowship, which equips leaders to publish, research, and carry these ideas into the public sphere.
Academic Partnerships
We are developing partnerships with universities and seminaries that allow participants who complete our formation certification to apply it toward specific academic degrees. Formation that counts — academically and spiritually.
Shift Intensives
Targeted, high-impact formation experiences built around specific themes — power and identity, ethical design, calling and discernment, and more. Designed for leaders who want depth without the full certification commitment.

The challenges of identity, power, calling, and ethical coherence are not unique to one profession. Choose your context to see how the Shift Certification speaks directly to where you are.
I'm a church leader
"I pour into everyone around me. But honestly — who's pouring into me? And am I building a church that can outlast my personality?"
I'm a founder
"I know how to build things. What I'm less sure about is whether I'm becoming someone worth following while I do it."
I lead a nonprofit
"We started with the best intentions. But somewhere along the way, I'm wondering if we're still actually serving the people we said we would."
I'm a teacher or professor
"I shape how the next generation thinks. But I'm wondering if what I'm teaching them is actually preparing them to lead with integrity — or just to succeed."
I'm a creative
"The platform is growing. But I'm starting to wonder if I'm creating things I actually believe in — or just things that perform well."
I build technology
"I'm shipping fast. What I'm not doing is slowing down long enough to ask whether what I'm building is actually good for the people using it."
I work in finance
"I've achieved more than I expected to. I'm just not sure the person achieving it is who I set out to become."
I work in humanitarian aid
"I entered this field to serve. But I'm carrying a lot of questions about whether the way we work is actually as dignifying as the mission says it is."

The Anatomy of Better Futures
Enduring impact requires congruence — the alignment of who we are, the ideas we steward, and the institutions we create.
01
Identity
Every institution reflects the assumptions, values, wounds, and beliefs of the people who create it. Before we shape the world around us, we are already being shaped ourselves.
02
Ideas
Ideas determine what we pursue, how we define success, and what solutions we believe are possible. Not every good idea should become an institution. Discernment matters.
03
Institutional Integrity
Institutions translate ideas into reality. Their design determines how power is distributed, how decisions are made, who is served, and whether a mission endures over time.
Where They Meet — Congruence
Derived from the Latin congruere — "to come together" — congruence occurs when identity, ideas, and institutional integrity reinforce one another rather than compete. The most enduring institutions emerge when all three are aligned.
Our Hypothesis
We don't just teach this framework — we're actively researching it to prove it. Our hypothesis: formed leaders build better institutions. And we believe the evidence will show it.
Built on research. Proven in practice.
The Shift Framework synthesizes decades of research across psychology, organizational behavior, institutional theory, and social trust. Across these fields, a consistent pattern emerges: when values, goals, behaviors, and institutions are aligned, people and organizations tend to exhibit greater trust, resilience, integrity, and long-term effectiveness.
Shift extends this insight by proposing that enduring cultural renewal emerges when identity, ideas, and institutional design remain congruent across all three levels — a hypothesis we hold with conviction and are actively working to prove through ongoing research and program outcomes.
Our Ongoing Research Agenda
- Proving the link between leader formation and institutional health outcomes
- Proving the congruence hypothesis across diverse sectors and cultures
- Developing assessment tools that measure alignment across all three domains
- Documenting long-term impact from our certification program cohorts
A hypothesis we hold with conviction — and are actively working to prove through ongoing research and program outcomes.

CEOs Should Think Like Humanitarians
If you are responsible for people — their time, their livelihood, their energy, their development — you are already operating in human territory. The question is whether you are treating it that way.

Don't just fund programs.
Found the institution.
The Designing Better Futures Initiative is being established right now — and the doors are opening faster than our capacity to answer them. With your support, Shift can move from a founder-led startup into a research and educational institute that forms the leaders who build the institutions that shape communities.
Because the best time to form a leader is before they build — not after something breaks.
